The Fishing
Peacock bass are vicious predators and will readily take a variety of surface and subsurface flies. Their size, strength, and explosive topwater strikes have made them one of the most sought-after species in the world. Peacock bass are often found close to cover such as logs, sandbars and drop-offs. In lagoons, you will often encounter large schools of peacocks busting the surface as the devour schools of baitfish.
Anglers will catch a number of species of peacock bass including Paca / Three Bar (Cichla temensis), Butterfly (Cichla Orinocensis), and Popoca (Cichla Monoculus). Most peacocks are in the 5 to 10 pound range. Fish over 10 pounds are very common and anglers should expect a handful of shots at 20lb+ fish during the week. On an average day, an average fly angler can expect to catch 20-40 fish. More accomplished casters that can cover water more effectively and put their flies close to cover will catch many more. In addition to the different varieties of of peacocks, anglers will catch a number of other interesting species including Arawana, Piranha, Traira, Jacunda, Redtail Catfish, Bicuda and Piraiba.
Accommodations
Our New for 2016 luxury camp offers the only single-occupancy cabins with queen-size beds in the peacock bass fishing industry. Perfect for couples or singles, guests enjoy the comfort of a private 270 square foot air-conditioned cabin complete with restroom and shower. After a day of fishing in the remote Amazon Rainforest, enjoy the upscale food, wine and hospitality offered by our on-site chef and staff while relaxing on a hurt-your-eyes-white sandbar. Or take advantage of a massage and a famous Brazilian Caipirinha on the beach. Our upscale camp caters to small private groups with three or four couples or six individuals with unparalleled amenities and service including all rods, reels and lures.
Our double-occupancy camps are identical to the single-occupancy cabins, except they feature two twin beds per cabin.
Guests will fish from our custom-built bass boats. These narrow, flat-bottom boats were specially designed to slide over sandbars and maneuver between logs and trees in order to access the various lagoons and channels of the Amazon. The wide, snag-free decks are perfect for fly casters. All of our accomplished guides speak fishing English and grew up fishing the area – so they know the water very intimately.
Tackle
Fly rods from 8- to 10-weight are the perfect tackle for just about anything you are likely to hook. Large Arbor fly reels with a good drag and plenty of line capacity are a necessity as these fish will make a mad dash for heavy cover as soon as they are hooked. Floating and intermediate fly lines will cover just about every fishing situation you will encounter. Leaders should be made from stiff mono or fluorocarbon and taper down to 30- to 40 lb test.
With such an incredible amount and variety of food in the water, peacock bass are generally not very picky. They will eat a wide variety of flies. Large baitfish streamers (4''-6'') tied on strong 2/0-5/0 hooks such as Lefty's Deceivers, Game Changers, Kinky Muddlers and Clouser Minnows are excellent choices. Bright colors such as white, yellow, pink, chartreuse and orange will show up very well in the tannin-stained water. Noisy topwater flies such as Dahlberg Divers, poppers and crease flies can draw explosive strikes as well. Make sure you arrive with plenty of flies - especially flies tied with more durable, synthetic materials, as the piranha and other toothy fish can destroy a fly in seconds.
